Overview

The Pegasus Rail Project is centred around the construction and operation of the of a new standard-gauge rail line around 220km in length linking to the main east-west transcontinental rail line from Sydney to Perth and the development of an associated inter-modal transport and Industry hub.

The transport of freight is an important element of the economy and an essential part of the distribution supply chain from raw materials through manufacture and retail to end users, both nationally and around the world. Nowhere is this more important than in the regions of Australia and, in particular, in high value resource regions that need to export the major part of their output.

National rail connectivity will deliver very substantial economic benefits to resource-rich regions of Australia and the countries deep-water ports.

Currently the resource-rich region that the Pegasus Rail Project proposes to serve does not have national rail connectivity and therefore relies heavily on expensive long-distance road transport to get its valuable resources to its customers in both Australian and wider global markets.

In order to capture economies of scale, consequent cost benefits, and also environmental and energy efficiencies, there has been an increasing tendency in producer countries to centralise the production, processing and value enhancement of resources at their source. This changes the requirements for freight transportation prior to distribution to both domestic and international customers.

The Pegasus Rail Project will immediately open up the producer region it proposes to serve to all Australian mainland cities and their export ports. This will deliver considerable time savings in getting produce (much of it perishable) to market as well as accompanying cost benefits and competitive advantages for Australia’s resource producers through real inter-regional national rail connectivity; it will also provide environmental and energy efficiencies and benefits.

Planned for development at the very heart of the Pegasus Rail Project is a highly efficient multi-modal freight hub and industry park, linking production, processing and packaging with integrated road, rail and air transport and connecting to priority ports throughout Australia and the world economy beyond our shores.

This facility will have customs and bond facilities for exporters as well as direct standard-gauge rail connectivity to all of Australia ’s deep-water ports; it will also facilitate efficient handling and distribution of imports and help expand trade relations between Australia and its trading partners for their mutual economic benefit.

The successful development of this strategically located multi-modal transportation hub and industry park will not only support the considerable existing agri-industry enterprises that currently have a combined value export output of around $4b annum; it will also underpin rapid development of the enormous proven mineral resources that have already come on stream from this region.
